Radon gas is the leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. Elevated levels need to be remediated. The only way to know if you have elevated radon is by testing. Radon gas is colorless and odorless. EPA recommends all houses, townhouses, and condominiums up to the 3rd floor be tested in a real estate transaction.

You cannot see, smell, or taste radon. But it may be a problem in your house. When you breathe air containing radon, you increase your chances of getting lung cancer. The Surgeon General of the United States has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer.
You should test the home you are buying. Nearly 1 in 15 houses in the United States is estimated to have high radon levels. Testing is the only way to find out if the house you are buying has elevated levels. The EPA and Surgeon General recommend testing all homes below the third floor for radon.
If you find that the home you are buying has high radon levels, there are ways to fix a radon problem and bring the level down to acceptable levels.
